Monday Movie Madness

Confessions of a Shopaholic
I am a die-hard Sophie Kinsella fan so when I discovered that her bestselling book, Confessions of a Shopaholic, was being made into a movie I was thrilled to bits. The book made me laugh out loud, so surely the movie would be fantastic, right?

Confessions of a Shopaholic follows the mishaps of shopper extraordinaire Becky Bloomwood. In the film adaptation of Shopaholic, Becky finds herself working as a journalist for a finance magazine while simultaneously shopping herself into deep debt. During the course of the movie we watch Becky shop, fall in love and wear several zany outfits. This is where my tirade begins...

The movie was a complete waste of 2 hours - not to mention completely inappropriate in a time of economic turmoil when people are more concerned about becoming homeless rather than spending $500 on a pair of Louboutin heels. The movie was a very 'loose' version of the book- the characters have the same names but that's about it. The script was atrocious, the characters were downright irritating and Becky's outfits were tacky. In a nutshell, save your money because staying home and cleaning your toilet is more enjoyable than sitting through this tragic flick.

I'm almost depressed at hearing the news on this movie. Just from the trailers alone I had a feeling of apprehension. I've loved ALL of Sophie Kinsella's books, and was very excited to hear about the movie. Now ... I'm not even sure I'll rent it when the time comes. If you like Sophie Kinsella try Plum Sykes "Debutante Divorcees" or "Bergdorg Blondes". Kind of the American version of Kinsella's character's but funny none-the-less.

I would still go ahead and rent Shopaholic just to see for yourself.Perhaps I was too harsh? I would have loved to see this script in the hands of a decent writer and director.
I am going to have to check out the Plum Sykes books for my upcoming holiday! thanks for the tip.

Oh I hear ya! This movie was 2 hours I'll never get back. It's too bad, since I like the actors and the premise was fun...the resulting movie was not good. I haven't read any of the books, maybe someday I will, but this movie was nothing but slapstick comdey with no heart. I like a lot of movies...this was not one of them!
